What to Do if you Hate your Job

Raise your hand if you’ve ever hated your job🙋🏻‍♀️

What about MULTIPLE jobs??

Guess what? ME TOO! 🙋🏻‍♀️

And let me tell you, I understand what an uncomfortable feeling it is.

I remember waking up every day and forcing my body to get out of bed because I didn’t want to go to work.

I would cry in the bathroom and have breakdowns on my bedroom floor.

I would struggle through a never-ending cycle of stress, anxiety and depression from my job that was bleeding into every aspect of my life.

I felt so unhappy and purposeless, like I had so much more to do on this planet, but didn’t know what that was or how to do it.

I didn’t know where to turn.

But during that incredibly difficult time, I promised myself I wasn’t going to wake up every Monday for the rest of my life hating my job and waiting for the day until I retire.

Because that would have meant I would be missing out on my life that was happening in between my work days.

I didn’t want that for myself and I do NOT want that for you.

Now I know transitioning in your career and changing jobs can feel IMPOSSIBLE for multitude of reasons- economic factors (that we don’t have control of), having the right skills, landing interview, knowing what YOU want, believing in yourself to actually make the change, fears preventing you from moving forward - there are MANY factors that can keep you stuck.

But even though it can feel impossible, doesn’t mean it is.

If you have landed jobs before, you can land them again!

So, yeah it can be challenging sometimes, but it’s not impossible. And more than that, it’s actually VERY possible.

Want to know why?

Because I did it! And my clients have done it too!

I’m not special or more skilled than you. I’m just a person who refused to be in a job I hated for my whole life.

Which can only prove that if I have done it, and my clients have done it, you can too!!!

If I can start my own online business and transition from event planning to recruiting and career coaching, YOU can find work you love. 😊

Soooooo, where do you begin on this job search when you’re so overwhelmed in your job to even start looking for another one and one that you actually ENJOY?

You start here: ⬇️

1. Build up your Energy: One of the first things you need to do is start building up your energy and motivation. Changing jobs, starting your own business or making big life changes takes A LOT of energy and motivation. And if you don’t have much to start with, you won’t get very far and it can be easy to give up.

And I know you know that you can’t pour from an empty cup 😉

So what do you do first? You have fun! Start planning in more joy, seeing friends, planning outings and doing things that make you smile and forget about work. Do this for a few days or weeks and see how you feel.

2. Pause & Reflect: The next step is to understand WHY you want to leave your job. There’s definitely something pushing you to leave (or multiple things), so you have to understand why.

  1. What’s wrong, missing or out of alignment? (Is it the tasks, people, culture, industry, lack of meaning??)

  2. What do you want and not want in your next role role/company?

  3. Do you want to start your own business?

These are the types of questions to begin asking yourself. You need to get clarity FIRST so you know where to go.

Please don’t just start applying to random jobs until you’re clear on these!!!

Remember: Fulfillment is subjective- it will look different for every single person, so a life and career you love will look very different from your mom, your best friend and your boss.

3. Get Clear on Your Skills & Values: You find more fulfillment and happiness at work when you’re working in alignment with who YOU are- that means your strengths, values and something that is meaningful. You need to uncover what these are and the impact you want to make to figure out what your next best career move will be (these are your blueprint for career fulfillment!) Think about this….

  1. What problem do want to spend your time solving?

  2. What is MOST important to you?

  3. What kind of life do you want & how does your career fit into that?

4. Explore & Experiment: Once you have more clarity on these things, you can start to explore! Maybe you don’t know exactly what type of job, title or industry you want to be in but you’re curious to take a new class or talk to someone in a field you find interesting. Now is the time to start exploring, take small action and see what you learn!

  1. What excites you?

  2. What are you curious about?

  3. What do you want to learn?

  4. Who can you talk to?

  5. What options do you have?

5. Challenge your Negative Thoughts- One of the biggest challenges you will face on this journey is your mindset and the daily thoughts that swirl around your head everyday. It can be your biggest asset or your worst enemy (all in the same day!)

Many people don’t realize that finding a job you love is more than just job hunting, but embarking on a journey of personal and professional development. It’s about carving your own path of what YOU want out of you work rather than what you were told to do or what others said would bring you happiness. During this journey- limiting beliefs, self-doubt and fears will pop in to keep you where you’re safe (in your dreadful job) even if you’re unhappy.

Our brains are meant to keep us safe (safe=familiar), not happy.

YEP. You read that right.

The only way through is to challenge the negative thinking patterns to more supportive thoughts (many people do this with the help of a coach, therapist or both!!)

6. Get Support (you’re going to need it!)- Going on a career journey like this can be challenging as not everyone will understand what you’re trying to do or why. It can take a lot of time, effort and dedication on your end and it can get challenging when you’re not around people going through the same thing. This is why people find success being around others on the same journey or having a coach to help them get there. (This is exactly what I do with my clients! 😊)

Let me tell you know, there is no way I would be where I am today with the coaches and friends I’ve made along the way!

I understand the job hunt can FEEL like a full time job. This is why clarity on what you want and don’t want, knowing your signature skills and values and having support is KEY to landing a job you love.

We’re no longer throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. We’re being strategic here knowing we need to slow down in order to speed up!

Finding a fulfilling job, starting your own meaningful business or creating a life and career your love is all about gaining Clarity, getting Confident and taking action to Create the life you want!

Is there a step on this list you haven’t thought about? Let me know! 😊
